Car shares, many people are learning, are great way to have a car available for you to use without all the costs and hassles of owning your own vehicle. Because you don’t have to worry about many of the costs associated with a vehicle, you can save money while you’re helping to reduce your carbon emissions and even start leading a healthier life. However, while all of this is a great thing, there are some factors that need special consideration when joining a car share co-op.

One of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to car shares is what kind of insurance will you need to take out. For the organizers of a car share, they will need to include each person on the list of drivers through the company and they will likely need to have full coverage auto insurance as well as some form or umbrella insurance. This may seem like it would cost a lot to maintain when you’re talking about even just twenty people, but the costs can usually be kept low and incorporated into other fees.

Generally, when you sign up with a car share, there will be certain aspects of the use of the car that are paid for by the company, within reason. Almost every company will cover you under their insurance so that you don’t have to worry about it. When the cooperative covers you under their insurance you get a better rate and you also don’t have to worry about paying extra fees as it will be included with your membership costs, along with maintenance and – in some cases – fuel.
